PUNE, Nov 12: A two-day State-level convention of the ruling Nationalist Congress Party will begin in the city from tomorrow. The convention, which has been organised with an aim to strengthen the party network, will also elect the new State unit president.Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal will inaugurate the convention, which will also discuss party's performance in the recently concluded assembly and Lok Sabha elections. Party sources said the State executive meet would discuss ways and means to strengthen the party organisation and its future strategy. The performance of the NCP, which bagged 58 assembly and six Lok Sabha seats in the State in the recently concluded polls, was much below expectation and the party would endeavour to expand its base in the State, they added.
The NCP has not given up its issue of seeking to bar persons of foreign origin from assuming high offices, and the meeting was also likely to discuss a proposed non-official resolution to this effect by the BJP in the forthcoming session of the State legislature in Nagpur.
The State executive body of he NCP was likely to nominate the successor of Bhujbal, the party's state unit chief, who has offered to quit after taking over as the deputy chief minister. The names of Abhaysinhraje Bhosale and Vishnuanna Patil are being discussed as the probable candidates for the president's post. Similarly, the NCP would also elect a new spokesman following the inclusion of Vasant Chavan in the democratic front ministry.
Bhujbal would make the introductory speech while NCP president Sharad Pawar would make the valedictory address. Office bearers and members of party's State executive, party MPs, MLAs, MLCs, district presidents, Lok Sabha and Assembly candidates and Zilla Parishad presidents would attend the meeting.
The meet will also discuss the current political situation in the country and party's role in the Democratic Front government in Maharashtra.
