Kallis leads SA's inexorable march

REUTERS
HARARE, NOV 12: Jacques Kallis scored 60 not out as South Africa took a first innings lead at tea on the second day of the second Test after dismissing Zimbabwe for a paltry 102 today.

At tea, South Africa were 106 for three.

Kallis reached his half-century after 87 minutes, off 81 balls and including six fours and a six. With Kallis was South African captain Hansie Cronje, who was one not out.

fast bowler Shaun Pollock was the major wicket-taker in the Zimbabwe innings with four for 32 while captain Hansie Cronje wrapped up the tail to finish with career-best figures of 3-14.

Lance Klusener also had a successful morning in taking 3-39, but fast bowler Allan Donald struggled with his rhythm and finished wicketless after 10 overs.

All-rounder neil johnson proved the most tenacious of the home side batsmen, scoring 20 in 98 minutes off 69 balls.

South Africa went to lunch on 20-1, and Boeta Dippenaar and Kallis seemed set for a big partnership against the limited Zimbabwe attack.

However, NeilJohnson dived to his left to take a fine catch at first slip to dismiss Dippenaar for 33 off the bowling of left-arm medium pacer Bryan Strang to end the stand at 76.

Six balls later Strang struck again to have Daryll Cullinan caught behind by wicketkeeper Andy Flower with the first ball the South African number four faced.
