UN sanctions against Taliban take effect
UN-imposed aviation and financial sanctions entered into force on Sunday against Afghanistan's Taliban rulers for failing to surrender Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden for trial on charges of plotting the bombing of US embassies in Africa last year. The sanctions were imposed by the Security Council on October 15, with a 30-day deadline for compliance. Council president Danilo Turk of Slovenia told reporters on Friday: ``the sanctions will go into effect automatically.''
