CHANDIGARH, Nov 14: To mark the World Diabetes Day, the Novo Nordisk Education Foundation - a non-profit organisation - organised a run at the Leisure Valley today.Flagged off by Mayor K.K. Adiwal, as many as 70 diabetic patients, including children and adults, took a lap.
On the occasion, Dr Anil Bhansali of PGI delivered a talk on diabetes. He said: "Currently, there are 3 crore diabetics in India and by the year 2025, the number is expected to double. Sedentary lifestyles, stress of modern life, obesity, family history, fast foods are some of the causes of diabetes."
He also stressed on the need for regular check ups, medication and exercise and diet as advised for such patients. Adiwal stressed on the need for creating awareness about diabetes among the people as the disease is spreading fast and resources with the health department are not adequate to.
In a health awareness-cum-diabetes detection camp organised by Nicholas Piramal India Limited, Dr Anil Bhansali answered various queries of diabetic patients. Various aspects of the disease were projected on screen through slides. The blood sugar check of the patients was done by the latest blood sugar meters and patients were given "Living with diabetes" booklets and calorie reckoners of the participated in the run. More of a solidarity meeting, the run was held in Leisure Valley itself with participants taking a round of the place.
Those present on the occasion included Bibi Harjinder Kaur and Jathedar Sardar J.S. Polia, Akali Dal president Chandigarh Unit.
