CHANDIGARH, Nov 14: The young members of Go Bananas Club celebrated Children's day with a difference. It was not all fun and frolic for them as they spent the morning with kids from the Sector 26 Institute for the Blind and were introduced to a few harsh realities of life. Club Director Anu Vala had arranged for their trip to the Institute, so that they could see how children deprived of sight coped with their lives. And it had quite an impact on them too as one of the young members broke down on seeing the kids write in braille. Yet they accepted, with much enthusiasm, the hand of friendship extended to them by the blind kids as they wrote their names in braille and handed out the sheets to them.
The kids were seen discussing how God had been so kind to them in blessing them with eyes. "My parents told me if I played with crackers, I might turn blind", said one kid to the other. On seeing the blind kids knitting chairs, another chipped in with "We stumble when we are blindfolded and look at the ease with which they're doing this". The kids at the institute playing cricket was another surprise to the "blessed" ones as the group refused to budge till they had interacted with them and asked questions.
However, Anu Vala did have to face some resistance from apprehensive parents. As she said, "Some parents were initially hesitant about sending their kids to the Institute saying that their kids were very sensitive and would not be able to handle the plight of the blind kids. I told them that the kids were not oblivious to the harsh realities of life and the sooner they are made aware of facts, the better it would be for them". Later, kids served sweets to their new-found friends and returned home with better appreciation of their lives and the best wishes for those denied the same.
