Defence key to encounter

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, NOV 14: It will be a battle between Salgaocar's superior firepower and the excellent policing of Churchill Brothers in the final of the Bristol Rovers Cup football tournament at the Cooperage tomorrow.

Salgaocar have two guns in Alvito D'Cunha and Brazalian Joao Pereira Dos Santos. They will be up against Churchill Brothers' defence which has so far been excellently marshalled by Osumanu Hussain and Co.

Though Alvito has not scored, his blazing runs have been a source of trouble for every team's defence. With the arrival of Santos for the last two matches against Mohamedan Sporting, Dhaka, in the league stage and Mahindras in the semi-final Alvito has the right company upfront. Santos earned his side two penalties in two games but both were wasted.

If the mid-field provides them with adequate ammunition, the guns will boom like cannons. Salgaocar have always shown more purpose in their movements but they will have to guard against Churchill's neat patterns.

Churchill, the Goa Leaguechampions, love to keep possession -- they roll the ball back and forth. JCT got sucked into this vortex. The frustration of not getting the ball can play havoc in mind.

Churchill have put up organised display so far. If Salgaocar have been brilliant, then Churchill have been steady. And it stems from their superior defence. Churchill have conceded only one goal in four games, Mahindras scoring against them in a 1-1 draw. And in a tight contest like this, a team with superior defence carries the edge.

The record between the two teams is even with one win each and a draw. Salgaocar won in Governor's Cup, Churchill in the second leg of the Goan League. The draw came in the first leg.
