CHANDIGARH, NOV 15: The Indian Economic Development and Research Association has nominated city-based speech pathologist Dyal Chhabra for "National Health Excellence Award".The award will be presented at a seminar on "Individual Achievements and Nation Building" to be held in Delhi on November 25.The award is being presented in recognition of Chhabra's extensive work in stammering disorders and various speech therapies.Speaking to Newsline, Chhabra said: "There are various myths attached to stammering and very less information or awareness about this disorder is available. Normally, the disorder makes an appearance in children around the age of four years."Stammering can be due to hereditary factors and passed from one generation to another, said Chhabra. "Also, if a person is affected by some serious disease it can have negative effect on speech, especially in children, if they imitate the people who stammer, they may develop the disorder," said Chhabra.
Talking about his research, the speech pathologist said: "One thing of prime importance in stammering is that the person should be taken to a speech pathologist as soon as the disorder is noticed. One day's delay can make a year's difference. Contrary to what people believe, stammering is not only psychological but there are physiological factors attached to it.
