NOVEMBER 16: A resident doctor with Cooper Hospital was assaulted by a patient's relatives, who misunderstood the treatment administered.Police sources said Mohammed Sheikh (65), a resident of Jogeshwari, was brought to the casualty department in critical condition at around 8 pm on Monday.Hospital sources said he was weak and breathless and was suffering from multiple ailments like heart disease, tuberculosis and lung obstruction. He did not respond to treatment and his relatives were advised to get a CT scan done at a private hospital.
To resucutate this heart, the resident doctor Asadullah Qureshi (24) administered emergency cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. His relatives were also asked to leave the ward but one of them stayed behind. When the patient did not respond, he was declared dead.
Misunderstanding the cardiac massage as the cause of death, the relative reported back to the others, police said. The patient's son Mohammed Ghosh and daughter Mehbooba Sheikh got into an argument with Qureshi, and hit him with the hospital register, said Vasantrao Jadhav, Inspector (Crime), Juhu, police station. Qureshi then lodged a complaint with the police and the relatives were booked under Section 353 (obstructing a government servant from carrying out his duty) of the Indian Penal Code.
Hospital Superintendent, Dr Mahendra Wadiwala, said Qureshi had tried his best to save the patient, who was already in a ``compromised'' state.
