NOVEMBER 16: The civic administration's grand plans to improve the infrastructure in Mumbai seem to have taken off with the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) agreeing to fund three projects worth Rs 57 crore.Additional municipal commissioner V B Mathankar said the civic administration has received a letter from MMRDA saying it was willing to develop infrastructure for disposal of bio-medical waste, set up a plasma fractionation centre and improve the storm water drains (SWD). An amount of Rs 20 crore has been approved for the bio-medical waste project, Rs 6 crore for the plasma centre and Rs 30.5 crore for the SWD. But the execution of the work will take some time as formalities will have to be completed, Mathankar said.
However, this is a minuscule amount as the administration needs at least Rs 224 crore immediately to improve infrastructure. This would include concretisation of roads, work on which was brought to a halt last year by the Mayor-in-Council. Of the 450 km of roads, only 280 kms have been concretised so far, said chief engineer of roads V G Apte.
The civic administration is also approaching other agencies for financial support. Municipal commissioner K Nalinakshan has submitted a detailed plan to the Centre and had also taken up the matter four months ago with the then urban development minister Jagmohan. Nalinakshan has submitted a proposal which would require Rs 3,700 crore in all. The long-standing demand of the administration for Rs 1,000 crore from the Centre for development of the city is also pending. The administration is also considering going in for loans from financial institutions, though this has not been finalised yet.
