LUCKNOW, NOV 16: A petition challenging the election of All India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi from Amethi parliamentary constituency on the ground that a citizenship acquired by virtue of marriage was not equivalent to a natural born citizen, was filed today in the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court. The election petition, filed by Hari Shankar Jain, a city lawyer who contested the seat as an Independent, was submitted in the court registry. The petition said the citizenship acquired on the basis of marriage with an Indian has been termed as `Citizen of India' by registration, which is a separate class and category.
The Citizen of India registration for a person means that he or she is the original citizen of the country either by birth or descent. But for those who are foreign nationals and have acquired Indian citizenship cannot be included under the term `Citizen of India', the petition claimed.
