Mayor's plea on TB medicine

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, Nov 16: Mayor Maliniben Atit has urged the Central and the State Governments to provide tuberculosis medicine in syrup form.

Addressing reporters here on Tuesday, the Mayor said that during the routine meeting with the doctors in municipal-run Hospitals, it was suggested that a liquid form would be easier to administer to children than tablets. Maliniben said that during the Ahmedabad visit of the representatives from the World Health Organisation, doctors of the corporation-run hospitals, experts from the B J Medical college and other institutions from the State had made the same request. She said the demand was accepted in principle by the representatives of the WHO.

The Mayor said she had urged Health Minister Ashok Bhatt and the Central Government to make this medicine avaiable to hospitals in the State at the earliest.

She added that since April 1999, about 2,640 persons had been given free treatment for tuberculosis in the corporation hospitals.
