SRC and PSEB qualify

NEW dELHI, November 16: Sikh Regment Centre (SRC), PSEB (Patiala) and Karnataka XI chalked out contrasting victories over their rivals to qualify for the league phase of the 36th Senior Nehru Hockey Tournament here today. Scoring thrice in each half, SRC whipped SAIL XI 6-0. Palwinder Singh put SRC ahead in the fifth minute and two minutes later he scored the second goal to take his side up 2-0. Three minutes before the half time, Suman Kumar scored the third goal for the armymen.

In the second session, SRC scored three goals in a space of five minutes to complete the rout. Rajpal Singh (52nd minute) Baljit Singh (56th) and M.Minz (57th) were the other goal getters.

In the second match of the day, PSEB waged a grim battle to down a spirited Meerut XI 3-2. The winners led 2-0 at lemon break. Jasmeet Singh scored two goals in the space of sevenminutes to give PSEB 2-0 lead. He scored in the sixth and 13th minutes.

Meerut XI drew parity when Avtar Singh reduced the margin in the 48th and Jasbir Singh equalised in the 56th minute. Two minutes before the final whistle Kanwal Preet Singh scored the match-winner for PSEB. The goal came off a penalty corner.

Karnataka XI downed SAI Centres XI, Bangalore 3-2 after trailing 0-1 at breather. Arvind Singh put SAI ahead in the 15th minute and it took Karnataka XI 32 minutes to equalise through Kavin who converted a stroke. Jagbir Singh again gave SAI XI the lead in the 54th minute but in the very next minute John Verghese equalised and a minute later Prakash Chalka scored and that turned out to be the winner for Karnataka.

Chinmaya School advance
Chinmaya School defeated Modern School (Vasant Vihar) 29-17 in the girls section in the ninth Swami Chinmayanand Memorial basketball tournament. Neetu (15) and Shikha (8) were the principal scorers for the winners while Meghna (6) and Arisha (5) scored for the losers. In other matches, Carmel Convent girls outwitted Ryan International School 56-22. Sonali (24) was the top scorer for Carmel Convent while Namrata scored 16 for Ryan. Loretto School girls beat British School 27-17 while in the boys category, Shri Ram School edged past Ryan International 48-21. Summer (19) and Sunil (14) were the main scorers for Shri Ram while Aseem scored for Ryan International.
