Zee Telefilms plans foray into internet business

ENS ECONOMIC BUREAU
MUMBAI, NOV 17: After rewriting the television industry history, Zee Telefilms is making a foray into internet services through its newly created wholly-owned subsidiary, E-Connect India Ltd (ECIL). The services, under the brand name Zeenext, will be kicked off by March next year. ``The company envisages an investment of over Rs 400 crore during the next three years, a majority of which is expected to go into development of ISP infrastructure,'' ECIL president and chief operating officer, Sunil Jasuja said here today.

ECIL would launch its services in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore, to be followed by other metros in another six months. Unlike the traditional ISPs, which only provide internet access through telephone line, the company would make use of its sister concern, Siticable's network. However, in the first year, it would be in a position to offer only telecom-based connectivity.

Zeenext will provide portal services and e-business, besides internet services on cable TV connection, he added. In linewith its aim to provide high speed access to customers through all emerging modes, regardless of distance and time, it would set up its own international telecom gateways. ``The company has already applied for gateway licence and it is expected to be operational in the next eight months,'' he added.

Funding pattern of the company involves internal accruals and external or private funding by financial institutions or foreign institutional investors, he said. ECIL, has made ambitious target of four million subscribers in net segment.
