Jajpur wonders why aid is just a trickle

PRAKASH DASH
BAINSIRIA CHHAK (Jajpur), NOV 17: Residents of this village in Binjharpur block of Jajpur district have alleged large-scale irregularities in the distribution of relief materials. While some say local touts have not distributed the materials properly, others believe officials at Bhubaneswar are giving false information about the quantity of relief materials supplied.

The villagers say they have been surviving on uncooked rice for 10 days. The first bag of rice reached them a week after the devastating cyclone.

Recalling the night of October 29, Bhramar Mallick, an agricultural worker of the village, said he and his family survived the raging waters, flowing five feet above the ground, by holding on to an electric pole near their house. The next day, he found his house destroyed.

The administration has done little to alleviate the misery of the people. The people are drinking water from the only well into which drain water has seeped in. ``Nobody has put bleaching powder in it. We have no other source ofdrinking water,'' said Sura, 60.

``They make pompous statements in Bhubaneswar but nobody has turned up here to enquire about our plight,'' she complained. People complain that no official has reached the village to assess the losses. A medical camp of the Army, headed by Capt N Bannerjee, has been functioning here for the past three days.

The Captain said they have been supplying halogen tablets to the locals and there was no need to put bleaching powder into the well. He suggested that officials must provide Vitamin A tablets to people and carry out mass de-worming. Iron and multi-vitamin tablets should be given to pregnant women, he added.
