Five lakh kids form human chain for polio-free India

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, November 17: Five lakh children formed a human chain in the Capital today morning to create mass awareness about the on-going polio eradication programme.

About 10,000 secondary and higher secondary school children formed the chain near India Gate while the rest formed chains near their schools. The demonstration organised by Rotary International was part of an all-India programme in support for a polio-free India. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley said the involvement of so many children in the campaign was a big achievement.

Health Minister A.K. Walia said the state government was determined to make Delhi polio-free by 2000-end.

Family Welfare Department Secretary A.R. Nanda, representatives of WHO, UNICEF and Rotary International Director O.P. Vaish also participated in the human chain.
