Machra survives Sethi scare

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
Mumbai, Nov 17: Under-15 Karanpal Sethi of Otters gave club-mate Taran Machra a tough time before going down 3-2 in the 56th Indian Express-CCI Western India Open squash tournament at the Cricket Club of India.

Sethi seemed to be through to the quarters when he was up 6-0 in the decider but made too many unforced errors. Machra then never gave back the serve, taking all the points in succession from 1-7 to 9-7.

Eleven-year-old Alisha Mashruwala of the CCI overpowered Natasha Lall in a five-setter in the women's event. However, Alisha could not play her matches in the under-13 and under-19 on account of a stomach infection.

Jay Bhagat of the CCI had an opportunity to take revenge over Sandeep Jangra of Jindal in the under-13 as Jangra had thrashed him in three straights in the Air-India Junior Open Squash held earlier this month. Jangra had no hassles in repeating the feat, sidelining Bhagat 9-7, 9-1, 9-4.

In the under-17, Junaid Nathani, Amjad Khan, Gaurav Nandrajog and Neerav Tomar had made it semisand in under-13, Imran Khan, Sadiq Madraswala, Sandeep Jangra and Gautam Kalani are through to last four.
