EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
India win match, series
In the end, the panicky decision to recall Javagal Srinath for the deciding one-day international against New Zealand looked unwarranted. Although the Karnataka speedster bowled a lively line and gave the team the initial breakthrough in the Kiwi innings, it was the overall performance that really gave the home team a satisfying seven-wicket victory to wrap up the series with a 3-2 verdict.

Graf feted
The final curtain came down on Steffi Graf's amazing tennis career last night with an emotional retirement ceremony at Madison Square Garden on the court where she won five of her 107 singles titles. "This is just overwhelming. It's just incredible," Graf told the adoring New York crowd. "It's only been a year since I've been on court playing here. I started playing here 15 years ago," said the now 30-year-old legend.

Jadeja doubtful
With serious doubts raised over Ajay Jadeja's recovery from shoulder injury in time for the first leg of the Australian tour, the rumour mill is churning out a few names as his replacement. Coach Kapil Dev, a fitness maniac during his playing days, said, ``I don't want an injured man in the team, no matter who the player is. The exact nature of Jadeja's injury is not known and the Board has agreed to our request to send him to South Africa, if need be, for specialist treatment."

Asian hockey
With less than a day left for the Asia Cup, India -- runners up on all four occasions are raring to go for the kill this time. India play its first match tomorrow against a relatively unknown quantity in Japan. Indian hockey hasn't had the best of times in the recent past with disastrous performances on away tours. However India will have the comfort of knowing that they have beaten every team in the tournament and are the Asian Games champions.
