As the flat was opened, Brijmohan Gupta was seen keeping watch over Rajkumari's body, which was in a decomposed state. Brijmohan, himself an invalid and in precarious health, was immediately shifted to St George's Hospital while Rajkumari's body was sent for post-mortem examination. Since it is not known whether the couple had any relatives, police have appealed to their kin if any to come forward and claim the body.

According to Murlidhar Rao, Senior Inspector, MRA Marg police, inquiries had revealed that Rajkumari was a practising paediatrician in 1966, and had opened a clinic called the Child Care and Research Foundation. The clinic had beenpatronised by several top national leaders, including Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Zakir Hussain. The couple had been residing in the building for about four decades.

Neighbours told the police that the Guptas never ventured out except for Brijmohan, who came downstairs for food in the evenings. Rajkumari had been sick since the last three to four months and was unable to even dress herself. Police said she had died about three days ago but her husband was too weak to summon help. With no external or internal injuries on the body, they have ruled out foul play.
