NEW DELHI, NOV 19: The Jawaharlal Nehru University witnessed heavy voter turnout (67.9 per cent) in the student union elections held today. Though few students turned up at the booths in the first phase, the after-lunch hour session remained busy with many students coming up to vote. This time round, the University Election Commission had made elaborate arrangements to ensure that the poll were conducted in a smooth manner. Candidate supporters were not allowed to enter the schools where polling booths had been set up. Only the candidates were allowed inside the premises.Ex-JNUSU presidents Vijoo Krishnan and Battilal Bairwa were found giving last minute advice to the voters in what is believed to be a direct contest between the CPI(M)-led SFI-AISF combine and the BJP-led ABVP.
Polls ended peacefully at 5.30 p.m. and counting will begin at 9 p.m. tonight. Results will be declared on Saturday morning.
Meanwhile, election of the members of the Gender Sensitisation Committee against Sexual Harassment was held simultaneously today. Many students resented the politicisation of GSCASH as each candidate was supported by some political outfit or the other.
