PUNE, NOV 19: Even as the death in custody of history-sheeter Salim Shaikh has gone on records of Pune police as a case of ``accidental death,'' the State CID sleuths have started a probe into the incident.Additional Commissioner of Police M S Maheshgauri told newspersons today that the Khadak police had handed over the documents pertaining to the case to the State CID. A State CID officer of the rank of deputy superintendent of police will carry out the probe, he added.
Salim Shaikh was buried in Wanowrie late last night, police said. Shaikh's body was sent back to Sassoon hospital after his relatives demanded that a fresh post-mortem should be performed on him. But, later in the night the relatives refused to allow the doctors to perform a fresh post-mortem and took the body in their custody, according to the police.
The police have written to the hospital authorities requesting for their opinion on whether Shaikh's death had occurred due to third degree treatment. An inquest punchanama report, prepared by Khadak police in the presence of Shaikh's wife Noorjehan and a sub divisional magistrate, mentioned some bruises. The doctors who performed the post-mortem have reserved their opinion on cause of death and preserved the viscera.
