Alternative ways of learning at kid's fair

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NOVEMBER 23: Street children from Ahmedabad displaying their skill in origamy and staging plays, the Aga Khan Education Services (AKES) showing how learning can take place through play and physically and mentally challenged kids from Natyashala dramatising geography - all will display their creative efforts at a fair which celebrates alternative approaches to education. Organised by the Comet Media Foundation and the Bal Bhawan, the fair will take place at the Bal Bhawan premises on Marine Drive from November 24 to 27 from 10 am to 6 pm.

The theme of this fair is to explore the meaning of learning and how it can take place differently. By organising such a fair, the organisers hope to provide options that anybody can assimilate in a child's regular brush with school life, said Devasmita Menon, Vividha coordinator, Comet Media Foundation.

Learning aids, children's literature, innovative toys, games and ideas will be available at the fair. Several experiential learning workshops will also be heldtargetting balwadi teachers, primary and secondary teachers, management and policy makers connected with education. A day long seminar on education will conducted for teachers, school principals, trustees of schools and organisations involved in non-formal learning, said Sheila Tiwari, director Bal Bhawan.

Thought-provoking exhibitions on children's issues and activity corners for children in puppetry, weaving, origamy and other subjects will be conducted. The idea behind this is to make spots for creative learning rather than vocational education, Menon explained.

Comet Media Foundation is a non-profit organisation involved in producing educational communication materials in print, film and video media. Working since 1985, our concerns are centred around spreading alternative perspectives to a wider audience. Bal Bhavan is a government organisation reaching out since the 1950s to children to encourage their creative talents, making learning relevant and fun.
