After painful last vigil, 88-yr-old Brijmohan too passes away

Express News Service
November 23: It was the most he could do for his ailing neice: watch over her body till help arrived three days later. On Monday, 88-year-old Brijmohan too passed away in St George's Hospital, where he was admitted after police found him sitting by Rajkumari Gupta's decomposing body in their flat at Fort last Thursday. Himself an invalid, Brijmohan was afflicted with heart disease and tuberculosis, police said.

According to Murlidhar Rao, senior inspector, MRA Marg police station, Brijmohan was in precarious condition and could not move when police found him on Thursday. Fortunately relatives of both Rajkumari and Brijmohan were located thanks to newspaper reports, which had carried the story. Foul play has been ruled out since nothing is missing from their residence in Western India building on D N Road.

Rajkumari's estranged son, Umacharan Gupta, realised that his mother had died after he read the newspaper reports on Saturday. A resident of Vasai, he had not spoken to his mother since 1991. Umacharanhas since claimed his mother's body so that the last rites can be performed. Rajkumari was a practising paediatrician and had opened a clinic called the Child Care Research Foundation in the 1960s. Among her patients were Indira Gandhi, Jawharlal Nehru and Zakir Hussain.

Brijmohan's body will be claimed by his son, who is in Calcutta. The latter has telephoned the police, saying he will arrive in Mumbai in a couple of days.

Says Rao: ``We are happy that we have managed to track down the relatives so that the old couple can be given a decent cremation.''
