PATIALA, Nov 23: All India Shiromani Akali Dal general-secretary Prem Singh Chandumajra has condemned the state government for adopting anti-farmer policies and alleged that the state government had failed to safeguard the interests of the farming community. In a statement here yesterday, he said though cane-crushing season was going on in the state for the past one month, the state government had failed to announce the support price for sugarcane, while the Union and Haryana governments have announced the prices. In the absence of such an announcement, the state farmers are compelled to sell their produce in Haryana because of which the state is facing revenue losses, he said.
Terming the Badal-led government as anti-farmer, he accused it of appeasing the traders owing affiliation to the Bharatiya Janata Party, its coalition partner. He said the state had gone back on many of its decisions and has failed to do anything for the welfare of the farmers. He claimed that the farmers had demanded immediate withdrawal of diesel price-hike, instead, it increased the registration fee charges for tractors.
He accused the state government of adopting ``a wrong policy'' to help fill its empty coffers by imposing heavy taxes on common man but exempting the trading community. He appealed the government to revise this policy and deal effectively with the tax evaders and impose heavy penalties on them.
Chadumajra even threatened to launch an agitation in the state if the state government failed to make amends and failed to provide timely relief to common man. He reiterated that AISAD will not allow government to adopt anti-farmers and anti-people decisions.
