AMBALA, Nov 23: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Bibi Jagir Kaur has said that there should be no commutation in the death punishment awarded to the killers of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. She was talking to mediapersons at Gurdwara Manji Sahib, at a function organised to celebrate the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev today. She even objected to the decreasing of the punishment of Nalini, one of the accused in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, on the recommendation of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, on compassionate grounds.Jagir Kaur said the law of the land was equally applicable to all citizens, men or women, and if Sonia Gandhi had recommended commutation of Nalini's punishment on account of her being a woman, it was a wrong decision on her part.
The SGPC president charged her predecessor, AISAD chief Gurcharan Singh Tohra, with misusing the gurdwara funds during his tenure which spanned over 25 years. She said she had ordered an inquiry into the whole affair and persons found guilty of misappropriation of funds would not be spared.
Commenting on SAD's defeat during the recent Lok Sabha elections, Jagir Kaur said it was immaterial because the party had succeeding in preserving its identity. She said the Congress had won because of its alliance with the BSP. She, however, declined to comment on the SYL issue, but reiterated her support to the issue of 33 per cent reservation for the women.
