Wait for the superplex -- 3 theatres, cyber cafe, creche...

Suchi Smita Mohapatra
NEW DELHI, November 23: After the euphoria over multiplex concept, the latest thing in ``worry-free'' entertainment is the ``superplex.'' The first of its kind in India, an entertainment superplex -- Aeren's Entertainment Zone (AEZ) -- is scheduled to come up at Sonia Cinema in Vikaspuri around the third quarter of 2000.

A 20-crore project, the superplex proposes to take care of various problems -- like the bother of standing in endless queues for a movie ticket. For, who needs queues if the tickets are delivered right at your doorstep? To catch the latest blockbuster in state-of-the-art ambience -- that is a luxurious multiplex theatre with three screens -- all you need to do is reach the superplex and head for your seat. So it proposes.

Other proposals are a creche to take care of your little ones, an art gallery for a taste of the finer things in life, a cyber cafe, good food... ``The idea is to provide an evening of shopping, dining and movies,'' says Vikas Raj Kapoor, manager (marketing and communication), PMC India -- a cinema management company.

And the man behind it all is Rajesh Gupta, a civil engineer and director of Aeren's group, ``I planned the project after studying the concept abroad. I've been working on it for the last three years,'' said Gupta, who is also the youngest son of the Aeren family.

Aeren, a 30-year-old group builders and developers in Delhi, has to its credit several farm houses, colonies, residential and commercial buildings. Its clientele includes Pepsi, McDonalds, LML, MTNL, Sansui, UTI Bank and JK Group.

Now, at the superplex, keeping up with the latest in hi-tech entertainment business, the idea is to install state-of-the-art computerised projection system and latest digital sounds system. Also, to decrease the average transaction time, computerised ticketing system would be introduced. Moreover, tickets can be booked through tele/net reservation. Apart from this, ergonomically designed luxurious seats, with plenty of leg room, would be provided for comfort, space and excellent sight lines.

Besides this, the superplex promises to be affordable, and yet maintain quality standards. With Kapoor claiming that the tickets would be priced on the lower side of Rs 100, the monopoly of in-vogue multiplexes like PVR Anupam might be seriously challenged.

But why Vikaspuri when there were better options in areas like South, Central and the upcoming East Delhi? To this, Kapoor says: ``Such a project is highly viable at Vikaspuri because the target segment -- middle, upper middle and upper class -- is in the vicinity of the area and other parts of West Delhi. Besides the money, they have the urge to spend, but there are very few options nearby.''

Working all this out wasn't easy. ``The bureaucracy and the politicians cause major problems. It takes at least 18 months to get all the permissions and sanctions needed to start a theatre. At the same time, real estate prices are sky-high and tax structure is heavy. Besides, the project cost of a multiplex is 10 times higher than that of an average cinema hall,'' says he.

About Aerens's future plans, Kapoor says: ``On the anvil is the India Mall on Mathura Road. It will cover 1 million square feet and will have a shopping mall, a six-screen cineplex, amusement park, hotel, food-court, home store, super market with other activities like video game parlour, bowling alley, ice skating, along with facilities like multi-level parking and space for organising events and concerts.
