Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrated in Ahmedabad

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, Nov 23: The 530th Guru Nanak Jayanti (Guru Purab) was celebrated in the city on Tuesday. The Sikh community gathered at various gurudwaras to offer their prayers. The gurudwara at Dudheshwar hosted a function to mark the occasion. The function was attended by Gyani Gurmit Singh from Jalandar and Gyani Rajendra Singh from Kanpur.

The gurudwara was decorated with colourful festoons. Among the VIPs who visited the gurudwara to offer their prayers were Minister for Health Ashok Bhatt, Mayor Maliniben Atit and the Home Minister Haren Pandya. They were all honoured with the "Sheropa", a sacred yellow piece of cloth and a garland by Kartar Singh Dang, president of Gurudwara Shri Guru Singh Sabha.

Ashok Bhatt began with "Vahe Guruji ka Khalsa, Vahe Guruji ki Fateh" meaning long live Guruji's Khalsa panth and may the Guruji attain victory."

The Indian culture was facing a threat from the west and hence we should try to salvage our culture by obeying guru-bani," said Bhatt.

"Great men from the Sikh community have sacrificed their lives for the country and for Hinduism. We take pride in having such great men in our country," Maliniben said in her speech.

Later, prizes were given to those children who could properly recite "Guthka" -- slogans from the Sikh scripture.

Apart from the celebrations, `Guru ka Lungar' -- free kitchen -- was also organised. Around 6,000 people were given food.

In the evening "shabad kirtan" was organised, followed by Guru ka Lungar at Shri Guru Govind Dham, Thaltej.
