Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 23: Governor Sukhdev Singh Kang has reportedly rejected a nominee of the State Government to pave the way for a BJP State leader in the Kerala University Senate. It is learnt that BJP State committee member B K Shekhar will be the representative of lawyers in the Senate. The Governor is understood to have rejected a nominee of the Kerala Congress (Joseph) for the post. The State Government had forwarded to the Governor a list of 13 people to be nominated to the Senate. However, he is learnt to have accepted 12 from the list and rejected one to accommodate the BJP member.
The Senate nominations were a burning issue during the 1987 LDF Government and the then Governor, the late Ramdulari Sinha, had included five UDF representatives in the list. The issue had touched off a heated debate over the constitutional propriety of the Governor's discretion to reject the recommendations of the State Government.
According to sources, the constitution of the Senate was delayed due to thetussle between the Governor and the Government over the nominations despite the completion of elections to various constituencies.
