TTFI committee to curb age menace

NAVNEET SINGH
Nov 23: As expected seeded players scored victories over opponents in singles event in both boys and girls in the ongoing 61st Stroh's Junior National and Inter-State table tennis championship today.

Top seed Anal Kashyap of Petroleum Sports Control Board Academy (PSCBA) outplayed Hardik of Gujarat 21-17, 21-13 while his team mate Sukanta Das, second seed here, beat Ramit Singla (Chandigarh) 21-9, 21-17.

In the girls category, top seed Poulami Ghatak (Bengal) and second seed Mamta Prabhu of Maharashtra sailed into the next round.

Meanwhile, the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) has decided to amend its constitution in the next general body meeting in December, to curb the oeverage menace.

At present, the constitution does not permit a medical screening committee at the National meet. ``The medical board, if set up, would check overage players to some extent,'' said Mool Chand Chowhan, secretary, TTFI.

In the ongoing junior national meet, Bengal Table Tennis Association (BTTA) filed a writpetition in Calcutta High Court which directed TTFI to allow some Bengal players, allegedly overage, to participate. The secretary, however, was optimistic that after the amendment they would be able to take stern action against the state units fielding overage players.
