MUMBAI, NOV 24: Bajaj Auto is not keen to increase its stake in Maharashtra Scooters Ltd (MSL) even if the State government offers shares at a discount to the market price, said chairman and managing director of Bajaj Auto, Rahul Bajaj. The company, promoted by Maharashtra government, is making scooters for Bajaj Auto and the latter had evinced its interest few years back for a total takeover. The Indian two-wheeler market is shifting towards motorcycles as evident from the last two years sales, said Bajaj and added "hence, we are concentrating more on increasing selling more motorcycles rather than scooters, he added. The Maharashtra Scooter scrip is currently ruling at its 52-week low of Rs 48.
For the year 2000, the company is planning to launch its Saffire brand of scooters targeted at the upper end of the market. The auto start scooter has been priced at around Rs 30,000 and commercial production will begin by December-end, Bajaj said.
According to Bajaj, the company will continue its robust performance in the current fiscal due to its technologically advanced two wheelers. ``Our technology is as good as any other two-wheeler maker in the country and we will meet all the emission norms of the country,'' he said here today after addressing a meeting organised by Fountainhead book store to launch a book.
On competition arising out of Honda's 100 per cent scooter subsidiary, Bajaj said the Japanese company will start producing scooters in 2001 and by then Bajaj Auto will launch more contemporary models.
