Myanmar reopens border passes with Thailand for trade

DEUTSCHE PRESS AGENTEUR
BANGKOK, NOV 24: Myanmar on Wednesday reopened the Thai-Myanmar friendship bridge to trade and travel after shutting all border passes with Thailand for weeks after the embarrassing seizure of its Bangkok embassy by dissidents on October 1 this year.

The bridge checkpoint in Mae Sot province, 380 km northwest of Bangkok, was one of the four trading points Myanmar agreed to reopen during Thai Foreign Minister Surin Pitsuwan's one-day visit to Yangon (formerly Rangoon) on Tuesday.

Surin met Yangon's military Junta to discuss deteriorating Thai-Myanmar ties in the aftermath of the seizure of the Myanmar embassy to Bangkok on October 1 by five, heavily-armed student activists demanding political reforms.

Shortly after the embassy drama, which Thai authorities defused by flying the five Myanmar dissidents to freedom on the Thai-Myanmar border by helicopter, Yangon's military regime decided to close all border passes, effectively banning border trade with Thailand.

The Junta also cancelled fishing concessions for dozens of Thai trawlers previously permitted to operate in Myanmar's territorial waters.

Resumption of the some of the fishing concessions is now under negotiation.

Surin's talks with the Junta, scheduled days ahead of an informal summit of southeast Asian leaders in Manila, have restored Thai-Myanmar relations to some degree of normalcy.

"They want all activities to return to normal," declared Surin, upon arrival at Bangkok International Airport. "I think there were many factors that made them change their minds, including trade considerations and concerns about international relations," Surin told a press conference.
