Oppn blames Chandrika for church attack

NIRUPAMA SUBRAMANIAN
COLOMBO, NOV 24: Opposition Leader and United National Party (UNP) presidential candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe on Wednesday accused President Chandrika Kumaratunga of creating the conditions that led to the attack on Madhu church killing 38 civilians.

Wickremesinghe said the government had turned a sanctuary that had so far been left alone by combatants, into a strategic objective for political gain, thereby making it vulnerable to attack.

"The order came from the government that Madhu must be taken for the presidential election. The government has to take responsibility. Chandrika cannot run away from this," he said at a news conference today.
