Registrar of GU meets Governor

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, Nov 24: Gujarat University registrar M.P.Jadia, who was summoned by the Raj Bhavan for the inquiry the latter is holding into some of the university's controversial decisions, met Governor Sunder Singh Bhandari at Gandhinagar, on Wednesday afternoon.

Though vice-chancellor S.B.Vora had furnished some details to the Governor about a fortnight ago, the Raj Bhavan had expressed dissatisfaction and asked for more information. Jadia who was scheduled to meet the Governor on November 17, cancelled his appointment as the university's executive council meeting was scheduled the next day.

Highly placed sources in the Raj Bhavan said that, the governor met Jadia for about 30 minutes in the afternoon. "He came with more details regarding the procedure adopted by the university while granting self-financed colleges early this year," said the sources. However, the Governor has called Jadia again on Friday, to seek more details.

The Governor, who is chancellor of universities, is inquiring whether the university had bent rules sanctioning self-financed colleges during this academic year. Eyebrows were raised at the manner in which the university had sanctioned self-financed colleges. More than a dozen self-financed commerce colleges, Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Computer Application courses were sanctioned this year.

The Raj Bhavan is probing why permissions to start self-financed colleges were granted "so quickly". "The crux of the issue is that self-financed colleges were sanctioned too quickly. But here the schedule was curtailed," revealed a Raj Bhavan source.

Another angle the Raj Bhavan is looking into is whether the university had bent rules to favour certain educational institutions. It is alleged that one such trust, Som-Lalit Education Trust, bagged permission to start a self-financed commerce college, as well as BBA and BCA courses. The Som-Lalit Trust is run by pro-vice-chancellor K.S.Shastri's son.
