Gupta agrees to minor changes in portfolios

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Lucknow, Nov 24: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Ram Prakash Gupta today agreed to consider minor changes in the portfolios of sulking allies at a meeting with their chiefs, blowing away the trouble facing his new ministry on the eve of Prime Minister Vajpayee's visit.

Emerging from the meeting, Gupta told reporters that ``all the differences have been resolved'' and the ministers belonging to the allies would take charge of their respective departments tomorrow and attend the first Cabinet meeting rescheduled for November 26.

LCP president Naresh Agarwal, JBSP president Narendra Singh and Janata Dal (R) leader Raja Ram Pandey, who attended the meeting with the Chief Minister, said the matter had been resolved.

Gupta said he would try to remove the `disparities' in the allocation of portfolios. ``The alliance partners have left the matter to my discretion'', he said, adding ``their grievances have been redressed.''

The ministers belonging to LCP, JBSP and JD (R) had decided to boycott the Cabinet meeting protesting discrimination in distribution of portfolios to them and refused to take charge of their departments until the problem was solved

Replying to a question, Gupta admitted that pressures brought on by the allies ``do create problems in the smooth functioning of the government.''

On the demand of allies' demand that Gupta withdraw his statement that portfolios had been allocated keeping in view the `efficiency' of the ministers, Gupta said he had referred to only BJP ministers.

Referring to the allies' demand for a coordination committee of the coalition constituents, the Chief Minister said such a demand had been there in the past too. He refused to elaborate.
