Bihar Vigilance to charge Union Minister for amassing wealth

ARUN SRIVASTAVA
PATNA, NOV 24: The Bihar Vigilance Department has started proceedings against Union Minister of State for Labour Munni Lal for his involvement in illegal appointments and for accumulating wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income.

Munni Lal, before joining politics, was a bureaucrat and it was during his posting in Bokaro that he made the illegal appointments. According to the Vigilance Department sources, though Lal has refuted the allegations and described them as a wild attempt to assassinate his character, the charges are genuine. As a bureaucrat, Lal is said to have amassed huge movable and immovable property in Patna and Bokaro. These allegations had surfaced even while Lal was still a government servant.

Vigilance Department sources further revealed that Lal had appointed one Sanjay Kumar Sinha as Deputy Director (Social Service). But no rules were followed while making this appointment which was normally supposed to have ended after six months. However, Sinha continued to serve as deputy director for nearly five years.

Sources reveal that even Chief Minister Rabri Devi had personally enquired into Sinha's appointment and referred it to the Vigilance Department. Joint Secretary (Planning and Development) C.K. Anil is said to have referred the case to vigilance Department on November 30, 1998. The sources further maintain that same Sanjay Sinha, after his termination, is now working as Lal's private secretary.

The sources also maintain that the Vigilance Department is busy preparing the chargesheet and will make a move in this regard soon.
