ATHENS, NOV 24: India's Karnam Malleswari lost out on bodyweight to finish without medals in the women's 63-kg category at the World Weightlifting Championships here.Malleswari, a former World champion, lifted 127.5 kg in the clean-and-jerk, matching the lift of eventual bronze medallist Ioanna Chatzioannou of Greece, but finished fifth on bodyweight, behind Valentina Popova (Russia) yesterday.
Malleswari lifted 102.5 kg in snatch for a total lift of 230 kg, 2.5 kg less than overall bronze medal winner Popova.
Malleswari's snatch effort was 2.5 kg below Chinese bronze medallist Xiong Meiyin's lift of 105 kg. After hoisting 102.5 kg in her first attempt, the 24-year-old failed with 107.5 kg in the second and third attempts.
In the clean-and-jerk, the Indian lifted 120 kg in the first attempt and then hoisted 127.5 kg in the second. She, however, failed to improve upon it in the third attempt.
China's Chen Yui-Lien won all the three gold medals after twice breaking the clean-and-jerk World record with lifts of 130 kg and 132.5 kg, in the process bettering the overall record with a 240 kg lift.
Xiong, who also hoisted a record 132.5 in the clean-and-jerk but was relegated to silver standard on bodyweight, claimed the overall silver.
Popova won the snatch silver with a lift of 105 kg.
Malleswari's teammate, Kunjarani Devi, won a silver medal in the 48-kg class on Monday, lifting 105 kg in the clean and jerk. She, however, finished outside the medal list in snatch and overall with a total lift of 180 kg.
