BJP joins Goa Govt with three ministers

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PANAJI, NOV 25: The state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has finally decided to join the Goa Democratic Alliance government headed by Francisco Sardinha. Party general secretary Sanghpriya Gautam finally put at rest all speculation by announcing that three of its ten legislators would be formally sworn in on Friday morning. BJP leaders Suresh Amonkar, Digambar Kamat and Prakash Phadte will be given the health, power and labour ministries respectively.

However, Manohar Parrikar, party's leader of Opposition in the Luizinho Faleiro regime has declined to accept any ministerial berth in the Sardinha Government. ``I don't want to make any compromises by joining the government,'' Parrikar told reporters here. The party's leaders couldn't hide their embarrassment at being forced to lend support to Congressmen who were their enemies till last weekend.

The saffron party had reaped a rich political harvest in last June's assembly elections by exposing the power subsidy scam allegedly initiated by thenpower minister Mauvin Godinho. However, Godinho is a prominent minister in the Sardinha Government entrusted with the revenue and planning portfolios. ``I had provided all the documents before the courts, but the judiciary is taking everything lightly,'' said Parrikar who himself put Godinho in the dock.

Other controversial ministers in the Goa Democratic Alliance government include Dayanand Narvekar, Subash Shirodkar and Somnath Zuwarkar who were targeted by the BJP for alleged corruption.

Though it is just one MLA less than the Indian National Congress (Fransisco Sardinha), the BJP had to be content with just three berths in the ministry. ``We could accommodate only 14 members in the cabinet and since the Sardinha group already had 11 members we had to make do with three," a sheepish Sanghpriya Gautam told journalists. The party has already staked a claim for the deputy speaker's post which is now vacant. Parrikar however justified the BJP's actions saying Luizinho Faleiro had to be removed from office."He was becoming dictatorial with even journalists holding demonstrations against him," Parrikar said.

Faleiro who was in office for just five months was removed after eleven legislators led by Sardinha broke away from the Congress party on Friday. Meanwhile, the new chief has allocated the portfolios of his ministers. Narvekar gets irrigation and town and country planning, Shirodkar -- public works, Victoria Fernandes -- tourism, Alexio Sequiera -- industry, and Zuwarkar -- co-operation.

Sardinha announced that all the decisions taken by Faleiro since Friday when the crisis began would be reversed immediately. Similarly all decisions opposed by the Sardinha group earlier in the government would also be opened for review, he said. He also directed the new industry minister Alexio Sequeira to take a decision on the controversial Meta Strips metal recycling plant controversy.
