Periscope on Pakistan
Blasts in the time of military rule Dawn: Coming as it does after the series of rocket attacks in Islamabad, Saturday's bomb blast in Lahore, which killed seven people and injured scores of others, will be seen as a tragic development. The bomb, planted on a bicycle, went off in a crowded bazaar. Several children, in a video games parlour were also injured.Incidents like this have happened before also, and in each case no trace of the culprits has been found. But with the military now in control, the expectation is that law and order is in more capable hands.A political message could perhaps be read into the Islamabad incident but it is more difficult to come to any conclusions about the Lahore blast. It is hard to understand why the police and other security agencies have not come out with any tangible clues to the hits that rocked the federal capital. Lawyers' team to defend ousted PM The Nation: A team of eminent lawyers has been formed to defend former Prime MinisterNawaz Sharif in the plane case. The team comprises lawyers Ejaz Batalvi, Khawaja Sultan Ahmed, former LHC Judge Aftab Farrukh and Haleem Pirzada. Another lawyer will be included in this team within a couple of days. This team will defend the case in a professional style. Qazi Ashraf will defend Aminullah Chaudhry while Malik Manzoor will advocate Rana Maqbool. It has been decided that all the lawyers will defend the case as a team. Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
