Laxman stands firm amidst the ruins

Ashish Shukla
BRISBANE, NOV 28: Another defiant knock of 73 from first-innings' centurion VVS Laxman was not enough to save the Indians from all but a defeat as they were bowled out for 204 on the third day of their tour opener against Queensland here today.

Queensland, who were all out for 401 in the morning taking a 124-run first-innings lead, need to score just 81 runs with a full day's play remaining in the four-day match at the Gabba.

It was an abject surrender from both seniors and juniors in the touring side with more blame falling on the youngsters, who showed no heart for a fight nor any wish to book a place in the Test XI for the series opener against Australia on December 10.

The experienced Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar were out to irresponsible shots after having a good look-in at the bowling.

Only first innings hero Laxman produced a good knock, though eventually he too was guilty of throwing his wicket away on the last ball before the tea interval, going for an extravagant square drive off a widedelivery from left-arm spinner Matthew Anderson to be caught behind.

His runs came off 101 balls in 135 minutes and included 12 fours.

Dravid and Tendulkar committed similar indiscretions.

Dravid (42) hit Anderson for a huge six and holed out to mid-on attempting to repeat the shot.

Tendulkar batted for nearly an hour for his 27 runs, hitting five fours from 51 balls. He uppishly cut medium-fast bowler Scott Muller to Matthew Hayden at gully after being dropped at the same spot a couple of overs earlier.

The Indians' worry was compounded by the failure of openers Devang Gandhi and Sadagopan Ramesh, who were out after making 13 each, and young hope Vijay Bharadwaj (0), who suffered his second failure of the match.

The one noticeable failure of Indians in the match was their inability to rotate the strike. Dravid, for example, faced 109 balls for his 42 runs, which included seven fours and a six. In other words, he took eight singles from as many as 101 balls.

The Indians woes were of their ownmaking against an ordinary bowling attack. On a pace-friendly wicket, the Indians lost most wickets to spinner Anderson, who bagged four for 50, including two wickets from the last three balls of the day.
