Aceh rebels refuse to talk, threaten stir

REUTERS
JAKARTA, November 29: Separatist rebels in Indonesia's Aceh province today warned of revolution if it is not given the option of independence.

``Aceh does not want to hold dialogues any more. If we are not given the option of independence, the people are ready to take up arms for a revolution... To fight against the government of Indonesia,'' Free Aceh spokesman Ismail Sahputra told Reuters.

He said outsiders had no right to decide Aceh's fate. President Abdur Rahman Wahid has specifically ruled out giving the option of independence in a proposed referendum.

Wahid plans to meet leading Acehnese this week in an attempt to resolve the crisis but Free Aceh said it would not be sending any representatives. Free Aceh has waged an insurgency for independence from Indonesia for nearly a quarter of a century.

Sahputra said Asian countries as well as the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) should remain neutral.
