MC meet likely to be stormy

C.B. SINGH
CHANDIGARH, NOV 29: With the councillors of the ruling party determined to pull up the officials over the non-implementation of the resolution pertaining to the appointment of those ad hoc employees who had completed 240 days in service, the meeting of the House of the Municipal Corporation tomorrow is likely to be stormy.

Though the resolution seeking reappointment of all sacked employees having completed 240 days was passed by the 29-member House of the Corporation in October, yet no concrete step has been taken till date in this regard, leading to disenchantment among the ruling party councillors. It may be recalled that the resolution was moved by former senior deputy mayor Prem Sagar Jain and passed with voice vote.

Even though a concerted effort is being taken by Mayor Kewal Krishan Adiwal to convene the meeting in a cordial atmosphere as his term ends on December 23, some of the councillors are in no mood to let him off on the issue of the sexual harassment of a woman employee by a senior MC official. The Mayor had given a clean chit to the official concerned.

Though the issue of levying a tax on the local cable operators for using municipal land for erecting poles etc. for spreading their network has been listed on the agenda, the members of Opposition express their doubt over its clearance. Any move of the ruling party members to suspend the resolution at this stage will lead to the turmoil in the House, said a Congress councillor.

According to sources, even though the most debatable issues relating to property tax and water tariff have not been listed on the agenda, the letter of Administration on delay in road-recarpeting is expected to be placed before the House for discussion. After discussion, the Mayor may seek the approval of the House to reply to the letter by the Administration pulling up the former for its failure to complete the targeted road repair work on time.

Adiwal is expected to spend a lot of time on projecting the achievements of the Corporation during his tenure and this is likely to lead to resentment in the House.
