CHANDIGARH, NOV 29: In a gruesome incident, Gurcharan Singh, a resident of Sector 7-C here, was shot by his brother-in-law today. The incident occurred at 7.30 p.m. today when Kulbir Singh, riding along with the deceased on the latter's motorcycle, shot him below the chin with a country-made revolver, killing him on the spot.
Hearing the shots, the police on patrol duty immediately swung into action and arrested the assailant, who tried to flee on the motorcycle of the deceased.
Inspector General of Police S.K. Singh said Kulbir Singh, a resident of Jandiala in Nawanshahr district of Punjab, killed Gurcharan as the sister of Kulbir had eloped with the latter, who didn't belong to their caste, and married him without the consent of her family about one-and-a-half years back. Gurcharan reportedly met Kulbir's family during his visits to his sister's house in Jandiala.
Singh further disclosed that Kulbir Singh revealed having procured the weapon about four months back from Saharanpur because he wanted to avenge the dishonour brought to the family name by his sister by marrying Gurcharan. For the purpose, he befriended Gurcharan, the police said.
