CHANDIGARH, NOV 29: As part of the ongoing anti-encroachment drive, the enforcement staff and workers of the Engineering Wing of the Municipal Corporation removed encroachments from the road sides in Sector 24 here today, brewing resentment among the residents of the area. The operation began at 8.30 a.m. under the supervision of executive magistrate and lasted for nine hours. However, during the drive, the water pipe and a telephone pole were damaged, affecting the drinking water supply and the telecommunication services in the area. The residents alleged that the enforcement staff adopted a pick-and-choose policy, indicating a biased attitude towards encroachments. A.K. Sobte, a resident, while seeking uniformity in the removal of encroachments, said no prior information was given about the drive. He also pointed out towards the encroachments in front of the houses of judges. Though police force was deployed to assist the enforcement staff and maintain law and order, no untoward incident was reported.
Refuting all allegations about not giving prior information about the drive, officials supervising the operation said the drive was to pave way for the recarpeting of roads.
