Chennai, Dec 2: The Indian Navy is planning to host a flamboyant unprecedented Naval week celebration in Tamil Nadu which will include a major demonstration by Navy ships, submarines and helicopters at the Marina beach, state Naval officer-in-charge A K Madan said on Wednesday.Addressing mediapersons in Chennai, he said the Naval week was being celebrated throughout the country from December 3 and that during this year's celebrations, the state's Naval wing had decided to demonstrate its function to the public.
The celebrations throughout the country marked the historic event of the successful attack on Karachi harbour launched by the Indian Navy on December 4, 1971.
The Naval week in the city will commence with a Navy Day reception in which Governor M Fathima Beevi will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony.
The Naval Display is expected to be a show stopper on December 12 which will be performed at the Marina beach with a strength of 12 Naval vessels of the Eastern Fleet demonstrating theircapabilities, he said.
The other features of the celebrations will include a lunch for orphans hosted by the Naval Wives' Association of Tamil Nadu (December 6), Painting Competition (December 7), band concert at MCC by a 50-men symphonic band of the Eastern Naval Command (December 8) and another showdown at Kalaivanar Arangam (December 11) and cultural programme at Kalaivanar Arangam (December 9).
The Naval Ships will be open to visitors on December 11 during which organised batches of visitors will be taken to visit Naval ships berthed in Chennai harbour from 10 am to 5 pm.
