VADODARA, Dec 2: If the Bhopal gas tragedy and the recent natural calamities of Kandla and Orissa have a lesson for journalists, it is to shun trivial and mediocre reporting, expand their horizons and work for better preventive measures along with the three estates of democracy in such cases. This is what the speakers hinted at the Press Day function held here on Thursday.Organised by the Government Information Department (GID) and the Primary Education Committee (PEC) of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation, the programme coincided with the day of tragedy at Bhopal and the death anniversary of journalist Nikhil Chakravorty. The Press Day, which actually falls on November 16 -- the foundation day of the Press Council of India -- was, however, postponed in the wake of festivals last month.
Attended by journalists as well as students of department of mass communication, M S University, the programme had District Collector Anil Mukim; Joint Director, Information department, Mansinh Damor; PEC Chairman, Kishan Seth and veteran journalist Bachubhai Vyas as special guests. While GID senior sub-editor Suresh Mishra conducted the function, his colleague Kalpana Buch welcomed the guests. According to the the speakers several journalists were only ``sensationalising the events, instead of playing a role of constructive critic.''
