Tamil order -- Schools shut shop for a day
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

CHENNAI, DECEMBER 8: Hundreds of private nursery, primary and matriculation schools in Tamil Nadu remained closed today protesting against a recent Government order making Tamil as a compulsory medium of instruction upto the fifth standard, even as the Government denied its imposition.

In Chennai, a large number of nursery and matriculation schools remained closed.

Meanwhile, an official press release here denied that Tamil was being imposed on school students. The Government was compelled to issue the order only after some schools started punishing students for talking in Tamil in the schools. `Where is the question of imposing Tamil on Tamils?', it asked.
