PORT ELIZABETH, DEC 12: Jacques Kallis, given a controversial life on 12, went on to score an unbeaten 74 as South Africa built a lead of 266 by the close of the fourth day of the second Test against England today.Kallis and Jonty Rhodes (batting 36) put on an unbroken 91 for the fifth wicket after the South Africans, 77 ahead on first innings after dismissing England early in the day for 373, were under some pressure at 98 for four. South Africa, 189 for four at stumps, lead the five-match series 1-0.
Controversy arose when Chris Adams appeared to take a low catch in the gully off left-arm spinner Phil Tufnell. However, as England celebrated, Kallis stood his ground and the decision was referred by umpire Rudi Koertzen to third umpire Dave Orchard. Five replays proved inconclusive and Kallis survived.
Orchard could not be sure because of inconclusive video evidence but pictures taken by the English broadcasters Sky TV showed that it had been a fair catch. The pictures were not part of the officialbroadcast and were not seen by Orchard.
South Africa earlier bowled out England for 373. It took them 15 minutes to claim the last wicket for the addition of nine runs in the morning session. South African new cap Mornantau Hayward bowled Caddick for 35 off an inside edge with the 20th ball of the day.
