After cop killings, Govt employee shot dead

SRINAGAR, DECEMBER 14: Militants struck in Srinagar early today killing a government employee, even as security forces intensified patrolling here in view of Monday's attacks on police personnel which left eight cops dead and 18 others injured.

Militants shot dead Abdul Rashid Zarger, an employee of Srinagar municipality, at Malik Sahib area in downtown Srinagar, official sources said here.

Militants also hurled a powerful grenade at a security camp situated outside the government quarters in Jawahar Nagar area of the city around noon, they said. No loss of life was reported.

Troops of Border Security Force (BSF) and other Central paramilitary forces took positions in and around Srinagar this morning to instil confidence among the people after yesterday's attacks on police personnel.

Senior officers of BSF, CRPF and the local police jointly carried out inspection of the affected areas.

All incoming and outgoing vehicles are being checked and passengers frisked in the city today as a precautionerymeasure, the sources said.

Meanwhile in New Delhi, members of major parties in the Lok Sabha today expressed serious concern over stepped up militancy and cross-border terrorism in the country and urged the Government to take stringent steps to check the menace.

Initiating a special discussion on national security and rise of militancy in various parts of the country, Congress leader Vilas Muttemwar said the `proxy war' initiated by Pakistan against India, the direct involvement of ISI and problem of illegal immigrants and their nexus with the country's underworld and mafia posed a grave threat to national security.
