Central team meets J&K CM on tackling militants

SRINIGAR, DECEMBER 14: A high-level Central team on Tuesday held separate discussions with Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah and senior police and para-miltary officers regarding anti-terrorism efforts being carried out in Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of Monday's attacks by militants here.

The team, led by Special Secretary (J&K Affairs) Tilak Raj Kakkar and comprising Director General of Border Security Force E N Rammohan and Director in the Union Home Ministry Shishir Sinha, met the Chief Minister at his residence and discussed the prevailing situation during the 30-minute meeting, official sources said.

The visiting team during its meetings with top officials of the State Government, Police, Central Industrial Security Force and Central Reserve Police Force also reviewed the security arrangements in Srinagar town, they said.

Eight policemen were killed and scores injured when militants carrying silencer-fitted pistols and grenades attacked half-a-dozen places within a radius of two kilometre inSrinagar on Monday.

Union Home Minister L K Advani, who reviewed the law and order situation in the state following the attack, decided to depute the team to go to the spot immediately, take prompt corrective action and make further recommendations after discussing the situation with the Chief Minister and other officials.
