Maruti Baleno: Sleek, Silent, Spirited

Mukherjea's place up for grabs
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

NEW DELHI, DEC 15: Amritraj brothers Vijay and Anand and former world No 26 Ramesh Krishnan are among the frontrunners for India's Davis Cup captaincy after the incumbent, Jaideep Mukerjea, expressed his desire to resign from the job.

Anand Amritraj has been in touch with the All-India Tennis Association (AITA) since news about Mukerjea's resignation became known, sources said today, adding the claims of his brother Vijay, who had led the country earlier.

Ramesh Krishnan too is a likely contender for the job as are S P Mishra, a member of the squad which figured in the Davis Cup challenge round in 1966, and Davis Cupper Shyam Minotra, sources added.

The constitution of the Davis Cup team, after Mahesh Bhupathi's shoulder injury has forced him out, is to be considered at the AITA executive committee meeting in Mumbai on December 26.

With Mukerjea's term coming to end, selection of a new non-playing captain will also be done during the AITA meet.

Mukerjea's resignation is, however, yet to reachAITA.
