Deshmukh seeks study on development of Vidarbha
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

NAGPUR, DEC 28: Scientific approach is necessary to assess actual backwardness of a particular regions like Vidarbha, CM Vilasrao Deshmukh asserted here on Sunday.

The Chief Minister said that to ascertain the relative backwardness of various regions, pertinent scientific parameters need to be developed. ``Assessing the backwardness of any region only in monetary terms would be wrong, the actual physical developments of the region should be considered while presenting the data of backwardness,'' the CM said. Deshmukh then called upon the Vidarbha Economic Development council to undertake a scientific study for Vidarbha and send its recommendations to the State Government.

He was speaking at an interactive meet organised by VED here. Anees Ahmed, Minister of State for Higher and Technical Education, Ulhas Pawar, Chairman of the Rest of Maharashtra Development Board, Vilas Kale, chairman of VED, and Govind Daga, president of VED, were prominently present on the occasion.

Explaining his point, Deshmukhsaid if the backwardness of a region is described only in monetary terms, it would serve no purpose. Likewise, it will be of no use to say that even after spending Rs 8,000 crore, Vidarbha has a backlog of Rs 3,000 crore.
